Like many millennials, Modest Mouse's 2004 release, Good News for People Who Love Bad News was among the albums on heavy rotation in my car stereo. In fact, the band has an interesting part in my early driving history. One summer day, I threw my car in reverse without looking, only to catch sight of a police cruiser in my rearview mirror when I finally turned my head. Hitting the brakes, I heard the opening lyrics of Modest Mouse's hit, "Float On" come through the stereo:
"I backed my car into a cop car the other day/Well, he just drove off, sometimes life's okay"
Lead vocalist and guitarist Isaac Brock sang as my heart jumped into my esophagus. Phew, that was close, I thought.
Over two decades after they taught me to pay attention while driving, the Portland, Oregon-based band is still going, albeit with a different lineup. Modest Mouse stopped by The Fillmore this past Wednesday to promote their latest LP, June's An Eraser and a Maze. The album is the band's first independent release after spending the last 20 years signed to Epic Records. Check out our photos from the jamtastic set below.
