South Philly's own Low Cut Connie made national headlines earlier this year, after the band withdrew from a concert at the Kennedy Center in response to President Trump's hostile takeover of the cultural institution. For those familiar with Low Cut Connie and its energetic frontman, Adam Weiner, the news was unsurprising. Since starting the Low Cut Connie project in 2010, Weiner has been unwavering in his commitment to creating inclusive spaces at all his shows—a stance he reaffirmed in the Instagram post announcing the Kennedy Center cancellation.

"Our little rock n roll act stands for diversity, inclusion, and truth-telling," Weiner wrote. "My extended Low Cut Connie family includes black, white, gay, straight, transgender, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, atheist and immigrant individuals."

In May, Low Cut Connie released the track "Livin' in the USA," which describes the horror of watching children being torn from their parents' arms amidst the Trump administration's mass deportations, and watching your homeland quickly transform into something you no longer recognize.

Yesterday, Low Cut Connie dropped "Settle Down," another song inspired by the dire political situation in the country. “The voice in ‘Settle Down’ is that of someone who is watching America slide into violence and corruption,” Weiner outlines in an official statement. “He has witnessed militarized policing against our civilians, brutality against immigrant communities, and a rise in authoritarian censorship. He has fought many battles for human dignity, been beaten down, but does not give up the fight.”

For the music video, Weiner tapped photojournalist Alex Wroblewski, who previously collaborated with Low Cut Connie on the 2020 song "Look What They Did." In a statement about "Settle Down," Wroblewski explains:

“This project incorporates still pictures from over the last decade of my career as a photojournalist. The images collectively capture a more polarized and divided country politically. They document what was and is happening between protesters and police and the tension that has been felt virtually everywhere – from the streets of the suburban Midwest and American South to the steps of the U.S. Capitol and across Washington D.C.”

The result (included below) is a heartbreakingly poignant piece of art. The 1-2 punch of Weiner's emotive voice ("Settle Down" is arranged acoustically, featuring just Weiner and his piano) playing over a photo essay that illustrates a country at war with itself is gut-wrenching. But as upsetting as it is, the "Settle Down" music video is an accurate portrayal of what is happening in the United States.
