About Music Jawn

A hub for music lovers in Philadelphia and its surrounding metro areas, Music Jawn's goal is to celebrate Philly's music scene — from the independent artists trying to break through all the noise to larger acts who are paying us a visit on their most recent tour (something that's been happening less frequently these days).

We're living in unprecedented times, and Music Jawn believes music is more important now than ever before. Music gives us respite on a shitty day. Music gives us hope that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Music unites us at a time when forces bigger than us are trying to drive us apart.

...Jawn?

In the nature of the inclusivity Music Jawn promises to foster, I won't gatekeep the meaning. The truth is, "jawn" is slang for just about any noun you can think of. Like many slang terms and phrases that end up in the cultural zeitgeist, the term "jawn" has roots in African American Vernacular English, and its history dates back to Emancipation (Click here for a great article on the etymology of "jawn" by WHYY). So, "that pizza jawn" could mean "that pizza place" (or that pizza oven/pizza cutter/pizza topping) and "that music jawn" could mean "that music blog/website."

Supremely Philadelphia, just like us.
